Simon is a PhD researcher at the Chair of Forest and Environmental Policy at the University of Freiburg. He is involved in the Horizon2020 SUPERB project (Systemic solutions for upscaling of urgent ecosystem restoration for forest related biodiversity and ecosystem services) that aims at creating transformative change towards large-scale (forest) restoration in Europe. In his research he analyses various forest-focused and forest-related (e.g. agriculture, nature conservation) policies to assess the (in)coherence both between different policy sectors and between multiple levels of governance.
Simon holds a M.Sc. double-degree in agriculture and forestry with specialization in European forestry both from the University of Eastern Finland and the University of Lleida in Spain. Prior to joining the University of Freiburg, he was employed as a researcher at the Thuenen-Institute of Forestry where he worked on economic assessment of forest damages and the analysis of timber market developments following forest disturbances. Moreover, he gained extensive experience during traineeships with international and (sub)national organizations including the European Forest Institute (EFI), the Chilean forest authority (CONAF) and the Department for Food, Agriculture and Forestry (Germany).
