Is the European forest sector ready to transform? European forest policy from an environmentalist’s perspective

At the end of the nineties, the EU Forestry Strategy was adopted to deal with growing concerns about the coherence between Member States’ forest policies and forest-related activities at the EU level. While the EU Forestry Strategy is currently being revised, it is questionable that there is enough political will to really work towards more coherent EU forest-related policy. Furthermore, climate change and energy-related issues are establishing new preconditions for forest use. Even though policy makers claim EU forest-related policies deal with these new preconditions, they are not tackling the real challenges that increasing demand is having on our forests. Concepts such as the “green economy” are currently being used to repackage business as usual practices while the forest sector remains absent from discussions about resource efficiency.
