Ida Wallin is a postdoctoral researcher at the Chair for Forest and Environmental Policy at University of Freiburg, Germany. She holds a doctoral degree in forest management from the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) and has conducted research about forest governance and participatory processes.

Research focus

In my doctoral studies I focused on how a deeper understanding of forest management is lacking in forest governance practice and research. While most research tend to look at either governance or management and focus only on specific actors, the wider picture of what constitutes forest decision-making is missed. By adopting a multi-level, multi-actor case study design I could together with colleagues show the importance of particularised trust and advisory services for how forest management is conducted by small-scale forest owners (primarily in Sweden) and how these factors are affected by larger scale processes in society.

Family forestry constitutes a highly diverse decision-making environment and challenges forest governance in different ways compared to company-owned forestry. Individual, small-scale owners with diverse attitudes, values and motivations interact with each other and other actors making it difficult to predict the response to policy instruments and subsequent effects on the present and future forest resources. Present challenges such as climate change and an emerging bioeconomy will continue to alter the very foundations of forestry during the decades to come. If we are to succeed in the shared pursuit of sustainable and resilient forest management there is a need for diversified practices also when it comes to decision-making. I am interested in how desired changes of forestry practices actually come about (if they do) and what role science and researchers plays, who gains and who loses, and by what means.
